Background

While our City’s downtown is known for its picturesque streetscape, tree canopy, landscaping, and sidewalks, these elements need TLC. Many of the trees along Armour Road and Swift Street are reaching the end of their lifecycle, sidewalk paving bricks are eroded and the decorative light poles are heavily worn. Updating our downtown streetscape is a major investment that should last 30 years.

Final aspects of the design were selected by the community and then approved by City Council. These design decisions include a new “North Star” brick paver design, a plan to preserve as many healthy trees as possible, fifty-foot spacing between trees and streetlights, and the installation of new, brighter streetlights. Overall, the City expects tree removal to start in February and the beginning of construction to start after Snake Saturday. The project is expected to be completed the following Spring. During this time, please expect intermittent closings along Armour Road and Swift Street. The flow of traffic will remain a top priority for the City and its construction partners, but some closings will be unavoidable at times.
