In North Kansas City, Council Members and the Mayor are voted on at the General Election which is held on the first Tuesday after the first Monday in April. All residents of North Kansas City vote at the North Kansas City YMCA located at 1999 Iron Street.

Mayor

The Mayor is the Chief Executive Officer serving a 4-year term and is elected at large by a simple majority of the voters of the City of North Kansas City. No person shall be mayor unless he or she is at least thirty years of age, a citizen of the United States and a resident of such city at the time of and for two years next preceding his election.

City Council

The City of North Kansas City has a Third Class Mayor-Council-Administrator form of government as set forth in the Revised Statutes of the State of Missouri. The City is divided into four wards and two residents from each ward are elected to serve on the City Council. Each Council member serves a 2-year term, and the terms are staggered so only one Council member per ward is up for election each year. According to Revised Missouri State Statutes Section 77.060: "No person shall be councilman unless he is at least twenty-one years of age prior to taking office, a citizen of the United States, and an inhabitant of the city for one year next preceding his election, and a resident of the ward from which he is elected six months next preceding his election. Whenever there is a tie in the election of a councilman, the matter shall be determined by the council".

Council members are responsible for determining policy, enacting ordinances and authorizing expenditures.

Registering to Vote

A resident who is at least 18 years or older may register to vote in-person at the Clay County Board of Elections Office or by visiting the Missouri Secretary of State website to request a form.
